What Is a Life Settlement?
A life settlement is the sale of an existing life insurance policy to a third party for a lump-sum cash payment — typically more than the policy’s cash surrender value but less than its death benefit. The buyer takes over future premium payments and receives the death benefit when the policy matures. Before life settlements, policyholders generally had only two options: surrender the policy back to the insurance company for its cash value, or let it lapse by stopping premium payments and getting nothing. A life settlement is a third option — one that treats your policy as the asset it is.
